Happy Labor Day! For many families, this day signals the end of summer, the start of school and shorter days ahead but, the Women’s Golf Group still has a month’s worth of fun golf events and activities planned for you! Highlights from August includes, the Senior Club Championship held on August 9th, hosting Midland Hills, North Oaks and Town and Country for Travelling Team on August 22nd and the Derby on August 23rd.
The format of Senior Club Championship was changed this year to a one-day competition of 18-holes for the players in First and Second Flights and 27-holes for the Championship Fight. Ten players vied for the trophy. Mistake-free and steady play on a tough-playing course won the Senior Club Championship for Kathleen Callahan! Atta-girls to Kathleen and all Flight Winners and Runners-Up!
Maggie Batten, Barb Countryman, Judy Kishel, Sandy Martin, Dori Martinez and Sue Ryan represented Dellwood for this month’s Travelling Team. Sad to say, we lost a little ground and as Jay said, “That’s not suppose to happen” when playing at our own club.
We are now 12 Stableford Points out of first and Town and Country is hot on our heels, only 4 back. We have one last chance to win on September 12th at Midland Hills. Please let Chair, Dori Martinez, know if you can play and help bring home this prestigious trophy. Go Dellwood!
On a beautiful Saturday morning, 17 players teed-off at 10:00 AM to start the popular Women’s Derby. These WGG members qualified to play in this event by shooting one of the 17 lowest net rounds in 2014. Putting was most certainly the key to winning with putt-offs on almost every hole. The stellar play of Judy Duffy won her not only the title and a big pay-out but also, an exemption from qualifying for the 2015 Derby. Heartiest congratulations to Judy, runner-up, Mickey Gahlon and all participants!
One Match Play Champion has been determined! The Second Flight Champion is Doreen Trucano, besting Runner-Up, Maggie Batten 4 and 3. Kudos to both players for making the finals. The stage is set for the remaining two final matches. The First Flight final match will be played by Kitty Considine and Sue Ryan. The Doubles final match will be played by Wendy Benson and Paula Chesley against Mickey Gahlon and Nancy Smith.
Looking Ahead…
As previously noted, September is the last month of planned 2014 WGG events and activities. Besides Weekly Play, we have a Mini Guest Day, Travelling Team, Tournament of Champions, the 9-Hole Shotgun Closer followed by dinner and the Annual Meeting and the 18-Hole Closer.
Call a friend, two or three and invite them to play in the 18-hole Mini Guest Day on September 11th. An always, a delicious lunch will be served following play. Our spring Mini Guest Day was rained-out so, take advantage of this great opportunity.
We need your “A” game for Travelling Team! Call Dori!
Though not a WGG-sponsored event, the 2nd annual Women’s Mercedes Championship will be held at DCC on September 16th. This, women-only, best ball event, open to other area clubs, is sponsored by Doug Mulder, DCC member and GM of Mercedes Benz of Maplewood/ Porsche of Saint Paul. The beneficiary of this tournament is the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center with 100% of your entry fee being donated to this very worthy cause. Prize? All expense paid trip to Pinehurst! Contact a friend and sign–up on ForeTees.
The season’s 9-Hole Closer will be a PM shotgun start followed by a dinner when President, Sue Ryan, will preside over the 2015 Annual Meeting. During the meeting, she will recognize the 2014 Board, the 2014 champions will receive their trophies, birdies and chip-ins will be noted, the Most-Improved golfer will be revealed and the 2015 slate of Officers and Board of Directors will be presented for election. Celebrate the year!
